Other Issues
Social Issues
Drugs and alcohol use are the cause of most of our social problems. We need to work with the social services team and the law enforcement agencies to ensure we get control of this situation. Particularly with school aged children.
Health and Recreation
This ties in with some of the social issues and also with the shortage of funds in the education system. Healthy bodies and minds learn much quicker and retain what is taught. We must ensure that adequate funding is provided for education both in the traditional sports and in land based activities.
Policing
Funding in other FN Policing agencies has been cut and funding for the APS has been frozen at the same amount for the next 5 years. We must ensure we retain our own policing by ensuring that Federal and Prov funding is not cut.
Housing
We have made good progress with our housing over the last few years. However there are still needs. The housing dept is working on a housing authority. I support that direction as it will put the housing demands into the hands of the people.
Roads and Infrastructure
Our water system is one of the best on any FN Community. However, we are fast growing too big for the system and the demands require that some thought be put into expanding the infrastructure to ensure we have enough capacity for any expansion of the population and housing demands. The roads needs to be redone. The water supply system is outdated and may need to be refurbished soon. All our sewage goes into septic tanks. This is outdated and not good for the environment. The Administration Building needs to be replaced as staff are crowded into small offices. A new more modern clinic needs to be built. And finally we need to replace that old outdated and unhealthy school. The demands far outweigh the resources so we have to priorize any new revenue coming in to decide where it is best used.
Off Reserve Members
We need to have some discussion on how we can better provide services for off reserve members. The biggest challenge is that we do not have legal jurisdiction outside the reserve. However, we do provide funding for post secondary schooling to all our members both on sand off.
